Abrasion Resistant - Other synthetic yarns do not stand up to abrasion and are not suited for wear and tear of outdoor living.

Bleach Resistant - Bleach can be used for cleaning this yarn as it does not affect the yarn's color.

Mildew Resistant – Weathersmart is produced with built in anti microbial blockers.

The Hatteras Difference

Our Rope . . .
is of the highest quality, meeting and exceeding standards for quality, durability, and strength. The process begins with miles of yarns being formed into piles. Three piles are twisted and balanced to create our 3-ply rope.

- All 100% natural cotton yarns are used to craft our classic cotton rope hammocks. Cotton, as a natural fiber, is soft and creates a comfortable hammock bed.

- 100% polyester rope is soft spun for comfort and adds more resistance to the outdoors.

- All DuraCord®, or color rope, is created from weather resistant, color fast, solution-dyed yarn. It has the softness of cotton with the durability of handling harsh elements of the outdoors.

Our Fabric . . .
is solution-dyed DuraCord for color fastness, stain and mildew resistance, and longer outdoor life. All DuraCord fabrics are custom designed for the Hatteras Hammocks line and are not available on any other hammock. The revolutionary DuraCord fabric is synthetic yarn that incorporates a cotton-like feel. The very latest in color trends have been studied to create the vast collection of designs. The quilted fabric hammock uses polyester fiber-fill batting.

Our Hanging Hardware . . .
On a hammock or swing, the greatest amount of stress is placed at the point of the hanging chains and rings. Our hanging hardware is the largest and heaviest steel in the industry. Our signature one-piece ring and chain adjustable hook eliminates the possibility of loss when in storage. Our hardware is plated with zinc for long outdoor life. Every hammock also includes the hardware (tree-hooks) needed for tree installation.

Our Wood . . .
The wood components in our products are meant to take the weather of the outdoors.

- Solid Cumaru (also called Brazilian Teak), used in our hammock spreader bars, is a dense hardwood that is resistant to rot or splitting from sun exposure. It naturally weathers to a beautiful, silver-gray patina. The cumaru used for Hatteras Hammocks products is harvested from managed forest projects.

- Oak is used on the Classic Hatteras Hammock spreader bars, swing arms and other supports. It receives multiple hand-dipped coats of marine grade varnish to seal the wood from the elements.

- Southern Cypress is used in the creation of the Roman Arc® hammock and swing stands. It is bonded by a radio-frequency gluing process and then formed into the award winning arching design.

Our Stands . . .
The heaviest weight steel in the industry is used for our hammock and swing stands. The Tri-Beam® hammock stand, an original design, easily assembles without the need for any tools. Spring pins are used for maximum safety of assembly. In the crafting of the stand foot brackets, the signature Right Connection® welding process is used, creating a strong 360 degree weld. A long lasting Cape Shield® powder coat finish is placed on all steel products.

DuraCord®

DuraCord®...

DuraCord® is the solution to the quest for performance yarns with the look and feel of cotton. DuraCord® is constructed of man-made industrial yarn that has undergone improvements in the aesthetics and hand and has been augmented with ultraviolet inhibitors and further anti-microbial enhancements to prevent degradation from outdoor exposure; but it is virtually indistinguishable from cotton. It has fooled even the experts!

In 2003, The HammockSource, manufacturers of Hatteras Hammocks and The Original Pawleys Island Hammocks, worked with a North Carolina concern, to create the synthetic yarn that was initially used in the creation of rope for hammocks. As hammock manufacturers, they had long been seeking a rope that was able to be produced of long lasting color but with the soft feel of cotton. Previously, all colorfast yarns were rough and not applicable for use in hammocks where the user completely lies within the ropes. "This innovative and proprietary product provided important customer benefits and helped to ensure that Hatteras Hammocks and The Original Pawleys Island Hammock remained the premier names in quality hand-woven rope hammocks," said J.A. Branch, president, The HammockSource. Never before had a rope been available with the cotton softness while maintaining rich color. The rope was marketed under the name of DuraCord®.

In 2004, these yarns, which were initially used in the production of rope, were taken a step further and were incorporated into fashion fabrics for outdoor and indoor use. Soft as cotton fabric with the performance characteristic of fade resistance and stain resistance was now available with the use of DuraCord® yarns. When the folks at The HammockSource hired textile designers to bring fresh custom designs to this revolutionary fabric, DuraCord® Textiles was born. All fabric in the line guaranteed a soft hand with a colorfast quality in all applications.

The DuraCord® introductions initially included a small sampling of coordinating collections that were sold by the hammock manufacturer. "We have taken this exclusive superior fabric and married it with top quality designs and are able to provide a solution to our customers of hammocks unlike anything previously available," states Walter R. Perkins III, CEO of The HammockSource. But it did not stop there. That same year, DuraCord® Textiles launched a sales effort of its offerings to outdoor and indoor furniture manufacturers industry-wide by displaying at High Point Furniture Markets and at the fabric industry's SHOWTIME trade show. The fabrics were met with great interest and were found in showrooms throughout the market.

Subsequent to the initial designs, DuraCord® Textiles continues to offer fresh designer styles in the fabric selections each year. Not only the offerings, but also the clientele continues to grow with every year. More manufacturers are seeing the benefit in offering one-of-a-kind fabric designs in this weather resistant, stain resistant yet soft as cotton fabric. DuraCord® Textiles. Believe it.

Hatteras Hammocks Southport Outdoor Rugs

Our Southport Outdoor Rugs are machine woven using the latest in power rug looms.  These looms are capable of a variety of intricate stitch patterns as well as up to five colors within the creel configuration.  Combine this technology with outdoor durable and soft to the toes WeatherSmart® yarns and the result is beautiful rugs, with the feel of cotton; that can last in the outdoors.  Whether used on a patio, deck or sunroom, the Southport Outdoor Rugs are the perfect accent for any outdoor setting.

Completely machine woven following our strict design specifications, the Southport Outdoor Rugs begin with a computer generated design file that is transferred to the loom with all desired rug dimensions specified by the size of the loom.  The Southport process is superior to other machine woven constructions in that it allows for five separate yarn colors to be woven into the rug.  The process also includes the addition of fibrillated polyester as the backing to the rug.  Other machine woven rug manufacturers utilize the natural, non-weather resistant fiber, jute, in their backing. Southport Outdoor Rugs are completely 100% weather resistant with no jute in the construction.

Machine made rugs are:

Custom designs specifically for Southport Rugs®

Designs ranging from contemporary to traditional; bordered to floral

Power loom construction for a quality and consistent look to the weave

Intricate detail can be achieved by the machine woven process

Up to five colors can be used in a single rug design

30 weave designs available to enhance the designer look of the rugs

100% weather resistant with fibrillated polyester backing - no jute to promote mildew growth

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Cotton, Polyester, and DuraCord® rope?
Cotton Rope is the traditional material of which rope hammocks are made. Cotton is soft to the touch and is of natural coloring. Cotton rope hammocks are the perfect style for people who can take their hammock out of the elements on a normal basis and store. The cotton rope hammock is loved by many as it is a very comfortable hammock.

Polyester Rope is weather resistant and will increase the longevity of your hammock. This bright white rope is a soft spun man-made fiber that is rot and mildew resistant. Polyester hammocks are recommended for tougher weather conditions and are more suited to be left in the elements for an extended period of time.

DuraCord® rope provides the soft feel of cotton while maintaining superior outdoor durability and solution-dyed color-fastness. It is a fast drying and stain resistant fiber that prevents microbial and mildew growth.

What is the optimal distance at which to hang my hammock?
The ideal distance for a large hammock to hang is 15 feet. The distance can vary and anywhere between 13-16 feet can be optimal. The closer your anchor points are, the more curved your hammock will be. The ideal distance for any hammock is about two feet more than the whole length of the hammock when measured from ring to ring.

What are the weight capacities?
Most hammocks, swings and stands all have a weight capacity of 450 lbs. There are a few stands, however, that are capable of supporting up to 600 lbs.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of rope, quilted and quick dry comfort hammocks?
People choose the material their hammock is made of based on personal preference. There is no better choice; just one that will more closely fit your needs. Rope hammocks allow air to flow through the weave of the hammock and can be considered "cooler". A rope hammock will also conform more to your body. This material is also a favorite because of its traditional look. A quilted hammock offers a quilted bed and is available in a variety of patterns to match the decor of your yard or patio. Quick Dry Comfort hammocks (also, known as single layer hammocks) are handy around the pool or lake because they dry extremely fast. And like their quilted counterparts, they are available in a variety of patterns and colors.

What is the life expectancy of a hammock?
There are several factors that can affect the life span of your hammock including climate, care, and the material from which the hammock is made. The life span can be as short as 1 year, if the hammock is not cared for properly. However, hammocks have also been known to last over 20 years when removed from the elements and stored properly. The amount of care you invest in your hammock will lengthen its life.

My hammock rope ends appear to be fraying, is that normal?
Yes. The "fraying" you noticed is referred to as "tasseling". This rustic effect is to keep with the look of traditional hammocks. Since hammocks are hand woven, some ends may be dipped in wax or sealed with a hot knife. This is to aid the hammock weaver in the weaving of the hammock. If the ends are waxed or sealed, the ends will still eventually tassel. However; tasseling, in no way affects the durability of the rope. Because of how the knots are tied, they actually tighten when weight is applied to the hammock. Therefore, the tasseling effect will not continue past where the rope is knotted.

Do I need to bring my hammock in and out of the rain?
Removing your hammock from extreme weather conditions will keep your hammock in better shape. And the better you care for your hammock, the longer it will last. We recommend bringing your hammock in when not in use to maximize its lifespan.

How much will my hammock stretch?
Depending on the material, your hammock can stretch anywhere from 1 to 2 feet.

Can I leave my hammock out all year round?
It is not recommended as prolonged exposure to harsh elements can shorten the life of your hammock.

Can I wash my pillow or quilted hammock?
Special care must be taken when attempting to clean your pillow or quilted hammock. These products contain special batten to help make the surface soft and comfortable. If cleaned too vigorously, the batten can bunch and you may not be able to get it to return to its original shape. Only light spot cleaning is recommended.

My hammock is "bottoming out" and I'm almost lying on the ground. What can I do to elevate the hammock?
The rope will stretch naturally over time and may need to be compensated for by adjusting the chains at the end of the hammock. If this is an older hammock and you have already shortened the chains as far as you can, it probably means the rope is nearing the end of its life. If the rope does not appear to be frayed or weak, you can try adjusting the hanging distance or hanging height (if possible). Please refer to our chart above, when trying to determine hanging distance or height of hook.

Will tree hooks hurt my trees?
Tree hooks will not affect the health of a tree; however they will leave a hole. We recommend using tree straps. This accessory will allow you to move your hammock from place to place very easily and also helps in adjusting the hammock height without putting several holes in your tree.

My stand wiggles, is it defective?
No, the hammock stands are manufactured that way to allow for motion.

How do I care for my cypress wood?
You can use boiled linseed oil or Thompson's Water Seal to retain the color and newness of your cypress product. A polyurethane varnish can also be used to help it keep its original golden color. Consult your local hardware store. We recommend that cypress is treated yearly with a water sealant to extend its life. All cypress wood will turn to a pewter silver gray with age; the characteristic is inherent to the wood.

How do I hang my swing?
Whether hanging inside or on a porch, make sure to hang it from a 4' x 4' beam. The structure needs to be capable of holding at least 600 lbs.

How far away from the wall should I hang my swing?
Just far enough to keep it from hitting the wall. Be sure to leave enough room to swing. We recommend at least 3 feet all sides.

The Hatteras Story

For over 35 years, Hatteras Hammocks, Inc. has been recognized as a leader in providing quality hammocks and accessories to a worldwide market. This longevity and the ability to meet the needs of its customers were instilled from the very earliest days. Founder and current chairman, Walter R. Perkins, Jr. started it all with a drive to be creative and improve on an idea.

In 1971, Perkins worked as a buyer for American Tobacco Company and traveled extensively throughoutTennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. Prior to a tobacco-buying trip along the Carolina coast, his mother asked him to bring back a hammock for her beach home. Upon returning with the hammock, Perkins, who was interested in woodworking crafts, decided to take apart the hammock and uncover its attraction. With a keen interest in how things are made and a desire to make something better, he discovered that this seemingly simple tool of relaxation could be improved. From that desire, Perkins began improving upon the design in many areas, from the strength of the rope to the safety of the hanging chain.

Perkins personally began selling his newly improved hammocks from the trunk of his car along the North Carolina coast, and during his trips to tobacco markets throughout the south. "It was the perfect example of a hobby becoming a business," states Perkins.

During the early years of business, all family members were either co-workers or customers for the newly formed Hatteras Hammocks®. With every sale and every year that passed, Perkins never lost sight of his early goals to coastally strive to make the product better and to make customer service a top priority.

By 1987, Hatteras Hammocks had grown to become the largest hammock manufacturer in the world. Perkins won regional and state awards for his entrepreneurial spirit. His drive to realize his goal of providing a product that offered the finest in comfort, design, and safety had been achieved.

Today, the company that was founded on an idea and a desire to make something better continues to follow in that tradition; a tradition that is evidenced in innovative award-winning designs, state of the art manufacturing, and unsurpassed service to the customer.
