Sun Safety Tips
Tips for preventing skin cancer and sun damage:
- Reduce exposure during the sun's peak hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be in the sun, make sure you have the proper gear: protective clothing, sunglasses, broad-brim hat, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours to maintain protection. And always reapply after being in the water, even if the bottle says "waterproof."
- Use only broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. SPF only tells you how much protection from UVB (the "burning" rays) the product provides. For protection against UVA (the "aging" rays), look for sunscreen that contains at least 5 percent Zinc Oxide.
- UVA rays are constant throughout the year. Sunscreen should be worn when it's cloudy and in every season.
- Check your UV index.
- Visit your dermatologist once a year for a complete body screening.
- If the fair complexion look isn't for you, get a tan the healthy way - with a self-tanner. Many allow you to build a tan according to how dark you want to be. Try this: After you shower, apply a gradual self-tanner. A few minutes later, apply Blue Lizard. The antioxidant-enriched and superior moisturizing properties of Blue Lizard will ensure even application of the tanner and - even better - you've accomplished the only true way to get a healthy tan.
How to apply sunscreen:
Because most sunscreens provide a water-resistant base and therefore will not adhere to wet surfaces, it is extremely important to apply to dry skin before going outdoors.
An average adult should use the equivalent of 1 fluid ounce per full-body application. While Blue Lizard will remain effective longer, it's recommended that all sunscreen is reapplied every two hours. Also remember to reapply after vigorous activity or toweling off.
Skin Cancer Facts:
The skin is our largest organ. Think about that. Cancer in any form is scary, but if you could keep it from invading your body's largest organ, why wouldn't you?
More than 90 percent of skin cancer cases are caused by sun exposure. That means you can prevent it. And no, you don't have to stay out of the sun to be safe. You just have to protect yourself.
At Blue Lizard, it's our No. 1 goal to provide a product that allows people to enjoy the sun without fear of this non-discriminating disease. We never have and never will offer sun products meant to tan; we are strictly a sunscreen company.
Read on for some eye-opening facts about the MOST COMMON and FASTEST GROWING cancer in the United States and tips on how you can prevent it.
- More than 1.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States.
- One in five Americans and one in three Caucasians will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
- Nationally, there are more new cases of skin cancer each year than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.
- More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, yet fewer than 33 percent of adults, adolescents, and children routinely use sun protection.
- The incidence of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is rising faster than that of any other cancer. There are now nearly 8,000 melanoma deaths every year.
- One person dies every hour from skin cancer, primarily melanoma.
- By 2010, melanoma is projected to rise to one in 50 Americans.
- While melanoma is uncommon in African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians, it is most deadly for these populations.
- The majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men older than age 50.
- Skin cancer is the No. 1 cancer in men 50 and older, ahead of prostate, lung and colon cancer.
- Middle-aged and older men have the poorest track record for performing monthly skin self exams or regularly visiting a dermatologist. They are the least likely individuals to detect melanoma in its early stages.
- Men over age 40 spend the most time outdoors and have the highest annual exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
- In the past 30 years, skin cancer has tripled in women younger than 40.
- Melanoma is the second most common cancer in women aged 20-29.
- One blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life.
- Regular sun protection throughout childhood can reduce the risk of skin cancer by 80 percent.
- It is estimated that 2.3 million teens visit a tanning salon at least once a year.
- In the past 20 years there has been more than a 100 percent increase in the cases of pediatric melanoma.
- Less than half of all teenagers use sunscreen.
- The effects of photoaging (skin aging caused by the sun or tanning machines) can be seen as early as in one's 20s.

Thanks again for all of your help.
by Missy
Thanks so much for the quick response and research into looking for the products for me. I received both your responses.
I appreciate you going above and beyond what I asked for. I found Blue Lizard about 3 years ago through my dermatologist
(because of Malignant Melanoma...diagnosed April 2001) and have used it since. I've tried other products but either had
sensitivities to the chemicals or found it not to give me any protection. This is now the ONLY product that I use OR
recommend and have been extremely satisfied with my results. Even though I have sun issues, I don't let it keep me locked
up in the house out of the sun. I still go to the pool or waterpark with friends and family and I always bring enough of my
favorite sunscreen for everyone! :)
YOU ARE THE BEST
by HELEN & MAURICE SIGOUIN - REVERE, MA 02151
MY NAME IS HELEN SIGOUIN AND I AM 73YRS YOUNG. MY HUSBAND AND I TOOK TWO OF OUR SEVERAL GRAND CHILDREN, WHO RECENTLY GRADUATED COLLEGE,
TO FORT MYERS FOR THE RED SOX SPRING TRAINING TO SEE BOSTON COLLEGE AND NORTH EASTERN PLAY THE SOX. IT WAS KIND OF COOL THAT DAY
BUT WE TOOK THE SAMPLES OF BLUE LIZARD THAT WERE HANDED TO US. THE NEXT DAY WE WENT TO THE BEACH AT FORT MYERS. WE WERE SO LUCKY
TO HAVE THE BLUE LIZARD SAMPLES. OUR GRAND DAUGHTER FELL ASLEEP ON THE BEACH AFTER OUR GRANDSON TOLD HER TO PUT ON THE SUNSCREEN.
SHE SAID 'NO I'LL BE FINE, I WANT MY BACK TO BURN'. WELL WE HAVE THE FUNNIEST PICTURE ... JIM, HER COUSIN WHO IS 23, PATTED HER BACK
AS WE LEFT AND WHEN WE GOT BACK, HIS HAND PRINTS WERE IMBEDDED ON HER BACK BECAUSE HE STILL HAD SOME BLUE LIZARD ON HIS HANDS FROM
RUBBING HIMSELF DOWN WITH SUNSCREEN.
... THANK YOU. WE FINALLY FOUND A SUNSCREEN THAT REALLY WORKS BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I CANNOT TAKE THE CHANCE OF GETTING BURNT.
NOW WE CAN ENJOY THE SUN THIS SUMMER AROUND OUR POOL.
PS ... OUR GRANDDAUGHTER STILL HAS THE HAND PRINTS ON HER BACK. SHE SHOWED THE KIDS BACK AT COLLEGE AND TOOK MORE PICTURES.
Great for sensitive skin
by Prem, NH
Pros: Effective Protection, UVA/UVB Protection
Best Uses: Beach, Daily Use
We started shopping around for sunscreen after my toddler (who had eczema on his face over the winter) started developing an
allergic reaction to his normal sunscreen. We tried various chemical sunscreens and he had some kind of reaction to all of those.
We then decided to go for physical sunscreens. We were particularly attracted to "Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30+,
Sensitive" because of its active ingredients of Zinc Oxide (10%) and Titanium Dioxide (5%) - very few sunscreens offer them both
and from research it appears that they are both very effective as a sunscreen. We use this every weekday on our toddler before
sending him off to daycare, and we also use it on him when we go to the beach or outdoors in the sun, etc. We have used it for
nearly a year and are nothing but pleased. When applied it goes on as a thick white paste, but within minutes it becomes clear.
In places where we have applied it thicker, it takes a little longer. We highly recommend it to those who are shopping for a
sunscreen for sensitive skin and for those who have a preference toward physical forms of sunscreen over chemical ones.
Recommended by my dermatologist.

Pros: Effective Protection, Non-comedogenic, Not Greasy, Rubs In Well, Sweat proof, UVA/UVB Protection, Waterproof.
Best Uses: Daily Use, Sports
My dermatologist recommended this product after I had several skin cancers removed. It protects well.

by Katherine, FL
We live in Florida and spend most of our time outdoors. My sons (13 & 14) use Blue Lizard religiously and it does an excellent
job of protecting them even when they are surfing all day (even their friends use it when they come over.) Also, I have a history
of allergic reactions to skincare products and Blue Lizard Sensitive or Baby has been excellent for me. We are all still tan, but
do not burn the way we used to with other products. I am grateful for discovering Blue Lizard and recommend it to everyone I know.
No Sting!

Pros: Effective Protection, Rubs In Well, Sweat proof, UVA/UVB Protection
Best Uses: Daily Use
This product does not sting or run into eyes and provides hours of protection in full sun.
The very best sunscreen
by Kathryn, Ohio
Pros: Effective Protection, Non-comedogenic, UVA/UVB Protection
Best Uses: Beach, Daily Use, Sports, Swimming
This is the only sunscreen that my fair redheaded son can use without irritation. In addition, he has yet to have sunburn,
even when vacationing in the Caribbean because we use this sunscreen. We have tried other brands, such as Aveeno, Coppertone
Baby, Neutrogena Sensitive etc. -- this one has the greatest range of protection as well as it is non-irritating on sensitive
skin. You have to rub it in well -- but it is well worth it. The bottle changes in UV light -- also a nice feature.

by Jodil, MI
My daughter is allergic to every type of sunscreen. This is the only type that works for her!! I feel like my prayers have been
answered. Finally something that works for a very active 5 year old. No more swimming in a hat and long sleeve shirt.
Highly recommended.
by Carol, CA
Highly recommended. It does take a little work to apply the sun cream, but it lasted awhile and does an efficient job of
protecting me from sunburn. The bottle is helpful in gauging how much UV is coming from the sun. One of the few physical
sunscreens out there. I've bought this brand because of the potential hazards of chemical sun blockers.

by Thomas, AL
I have eczema and am sensitive to chemical sunscreens. It is the only product I have found to have the high levels of titanium and
zinc oxide. I have used this product and have had no adverse reaction. It does go on a bit white, but it is absorbed in a minute
with no additional whiteness. I like the fact that it is white for a minute so I know where I have applied it, or not, as the case
may be. My children like it because of its catchy name and find it cute that I personally find lizards creepy, but love the product.
I highly recommend this product.
Fantastic. After ...

Fantastic. After reviewing ratings on the Cosmetic Safety Database, and reading a variety of articles and reviews, we purchased
Blue Lizard last year for the 1st time. We love Blue Lizard for several significant reasons: First, no detectable odor - can't
stand smelling like baby lotion! Its also non-greasy, another huge plus, particularly for hands and face. It is slightly thick,
but applies smoothly without excessive pressure - no problem for our 6 year old. Although it goes on white, once you rub it in
and it sits for just a few minutes, really can't tell. Price is far better compared to the competition. Went through about 8-10
bottles last season, and had no problems at all. Definitely plan to stock up again this year!
Best sunscreen for the money ...
by Nicole, GA
Best sunscreen for the money. I usually break out after a week or so of using most sunscreens but this one was different. I have
tried many brands on my face and Blue Lizard is the best. Not only do I not break out, but with the high levels of Zinc Oxide and
Titanium dioxide (what my dermatologist recommends) I didn't get burned after surfing for hours. Thank you Blue Lizard!

by Margie, NY
This is absolutely the best all-physical sunscreen out there, and I've been through a lot of them. It dries to a soft matte finish,
it is moisturizing, makes your skin soft yet it is not oily. When you first apply it, it looks shiny and whitish. In 15 minutes it
is matte and undetectable in terms of white cast. Since it is an all-physical sunscreen, the probability to irritate you is minimal,
even around the eyes. The UVB protection factor is SPF 30+. The price is also amazing. Bravo, Blue Lizard!

by kat, MO
I spent a long time looking for a sunscreen that was 100% physical, and that was reasonably priced enough to apply to my whole body,
and I found it! This has no smell that I can detect, and though it is thick, once you rub it in, there's barely a white cast.
I have developed no reaction to it, and I will continue purchase this brand in the future. I also bought the Blue Lizard Baby
Sunscreen, which is identical to the Sensitive Formula.

by HLee, CO
This is hands down my favorite sunscreen. Compared to many other brands that I have tried for sensitive skin, Blue Lizard is the best!
First of all, it contains physical block ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which is great for sensitive skin. Other
sunscreens have caused me to break out in terrible rashes, but not this one. I am Southeast Asian, and this sunscreen didn't leave
any white sheen on my skin. Although the product goes on thick and greasy at first, it disappears within minutes. It is also very
water resistant, and doesn't turn white when your skin is wet.
